was more scattered, towns were few and far between and of small dimensions, while living was simpler and much less intense than it is in these days of denser populations, unemployment, stress, and strain. Doubtless the people then had their own problems to solve and difficulties to overcome, and the mothers would have their customary large share of them ; but everything then was on a smaller scale and minus many of the artificial, unhealthy, cramping conditions of modern civilisation.
